Garni Temple

Garni Temple

We went up to Garni temple.
It was built in honour of a sun god, some say,
or maybe it was a royal tomb.
The last remaining pagan temple in Armenia,
it stands grand, defiant,
bold on its stony shelf,
circled by mountains, bare and brown.
Worship has gone from it,
but the stones remain.
What went on there a mystery will stay.
You cannot go back, only admire, wonder,
pause in your pilgrimage to the lamp of light.
